Maritime Heritage Education Subgrant Program: Eligibility
The National Maritime Heritage Grant Program (NMHG) is a federally funded program with a 50% matching grant reimbursement. The program is administered by the National Park Service National Maritime Heritage Program, in partnership with the Maritime Administration (MARAD).
The Massachusetts Historical Commission is among the recipients of 2023 National Maritime Heritage Grants Program, awarded by the National Park Service (NPS) to State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPO).
Eligible Applicants
Eligible applicants for the MHC Maritime Heritage Education Subgrant Program funding include:
- Local governments
- Private Non-Profits with a 501(c) 3 designation with the Internal Revenue Service. The designation must be currently active, and your organization must have all required non-profit corporation Annual Reports filed with the Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth.
- Tribal governments
Eligible Activities
Eligible activities must advance the maritime heritage of Massachusetts. These activities may include the curation, instruction, and interpretation of:
- Maritime Heritage Collections
- Traditional Maritime Skills
- Historic Maritime Properties
- Maritime History Topics
All funded activities must achieve these goals in at least one of the following ways:
- Educational activities about historic marine resources, including archeological sites
- Facilitation of public connection and access to maritime heritage and resources
The activity must focus on one of three broad maritime categories, and include one of seven educational project categories:

- Virtual workshops
- Online tours
- Public access to maritime history through website development
- Development of software application with interactive stories and games
- Interpretive signage
- Walking tours
- Podcasts
- Oral histories
- Story maps
- Exhibitions
- Lecture series
- Shipwright workshops
- A digitized catalog of maritime history
- Minor improvements to existing educational facilities and exhibit spaces
