The timing of the new taxes was particularly bad for Boston. A fire had wiped out many families and businesses, in a time before widespread insurance. A small pox epidemic further emptied the town. Merchants who had bought supplies for the British army on speculation were not paid.
The cry of “Taxation without Representation” was promoted by Samuel Adams and other Patriots/Sons of Liberty.
