John Hancock was elected Governor again in 1788. Not inclined to hold grudges, he welcomed Samuel Adams as his running mate for the position of Lieutenant Governor. (Adams would succeed him as the next Governor of the Commonwealth.) Hancock was too weak to address the legislature in his final appearance, so he sat to the side as his message was read. Three weeks later, on October 8, 1793, John Hancock died at home at the age of 57.
