Although John Hancock enjoyed the trappings of wealth, his charitable activities made him popular with all classes in Boston Society. He provided food and firewood for the poor. At one point he paid for the release of every person in debtor's prison. He also bought the first fire engine for Boston. In the depressed economy of 1765 he offered trusted employees the chance to have a branch of the House of Hancock, possibly America’s first business franchise.
