Secretary of the Commonwealth William F. Galvin and the Massachusetts Securities Division issue this Investor Alert notifying investors about a scheme involving fictitious certificates stating that individuals have been licensed to conduct business as stock brokers. Such “certificates” may be posted on social media (e.g. Facebook) or elsewhere. While the Office of the Secretary of the Commonwealth is a legitimate office, there is no “State of Massachusetts, Department of State, Division of Licensing Services.” Also, the Securities Division does not issue registration certificates, fictitious or otherwise. Before investing your money with anyone claiming to be a stockbroker, call the Massachusetts Securities Division to make sure that the individual is legitimately registered. The Securities Division can be reached at 617-727-3548.
