2024 Post-Election Audits
After each presidential election, state law requires that a post-election audit of 3% of all precincts in Massachusetts be conducted. This audit is done through a hand-count of all ballots cast in the selected precincts on or before Election Day.
On November 7, 2024, precincts were randomly selected to be audited, at a public drawing. Each city and town selected in the drawing began its audit by November 12. Audits were publicly posted and members of the public were welcome to observe.
If the results of the audit hand-count were different from the original results, the totals were amended before results were certified. The results of the audit are not always the final results for a precinct, as the audit does not include other hand-counted ballots that may have been counted after the audit occurred, such as provisional ballots, some overseas ballots, and mail-in ballots postmarked by Election Day and received within 3 days of Election Day.
The results of the 2024 Post-Election Audit may be found below, in the 2024 Statewide Audit Report. This spreadsheet contains the original results counted through Election Day, the audit hand-count results, and the total difference, if any. Each office and ballot question audited is listed in a separate tab within the spreadsheet.
Also available below is a written narrative, which explains the results in the spreadsheet. This narrative also includes information that local election officials included in their audit reports, providing explanations for any significant discrepancies found in the audit.
