Paul Revere died on May 10, 1818, at the age of 83. His will, written November 15, 1816, has unusual stipulations, particularly its very clear message that one of his grandchildren shall have “no part in my estate, except one dollar,” while each of his other grandchildren received $500 each. Revere giving his grandson a dollar prevents that portion of the will from being contested, a fact of which he was clearly aware. In addition, Revere’s will stipulates that his only unmarried daughter will receive all of his furniture, provided that she is still unmarried at the time of his death. Those not interested in the Revere family drama can focus on Revere’s signature on the second page, which is perhaps more shaky than one would expect from a craftsman. This is due to his age, his handwriting was not like this throughout his life.
