City and Town Governments

Each city and town structures itself by its own rules and regulations, either original or amended. Some towns have select boards and town managers, while many cities have mayors and city councilors. Generally speaking, no state office directly oversees local offices and departments.

There are 50 cities and 301 towns in Massachusetts, contained within 14 counties.
