The American Heart Association / American Stroke Association supports and advocates for public policies that will help improve the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20 percent while reducing deaths by coronary heart disease and stroke by 20 percent by 2020. There are many pieces of legislation that we will be working on including but not limited to, Obesity Prevention-Support policy that require 150 minutes per week of physical education in elementary school and 225 minutes per week of physical education in middle school;Require food procurement standards for all state agencies that are consistent with guidelines developed by the AHA and/or HHS; Secure public funding to create or expand Healthy Food Financing initiatives to increase the number of healthy food retail outlets (grocery stores) in underserved communities and to create or expand a Healthy Corner Store initiative that increases the amount of healthy food being offered in existing corner stores in low and moderate income communities; Clarify liability rules for the use of school owned recreational facilities by other government and non-governmental entities for the purpose of physical activity by providing the school not be held liable for property damage or injury when those things happen outside of the school day and as part of activities not sponsor led by the school. Support appropriations for state level reporting and implementation of shared use programs as well as incentives to schools to promote shared use. In Acute Cardiovascular Care policy Secure Statewide Funding for local School districts to implement their CPR as a Graduation Policy; Develop a Coordinated Stroke System of Care to improve the treatment of the stroke patient and enact statewide standards for the development and utilization of a stroke registry. In issues around Tobacco Control Support significant increase in tobacco excise tax on all tobacco products; Support tobacco control prevention and cessation funding. In issues around Funding for Heart Disease and Stroke Research and Prevention Secure dedicated state appropriations for heart disease and stroke priorities. And in issues around Health Equity Support public funding to address health disparities and improve health equity; Health Equity- Support and sustain an Office of Health Equity.
