Candidates seeking a recount of the results of the September 1, 2026 State Primaries are reminded that deadlines relating to the 2026 State Primaries are set by Chapter 34 of the Acts of 2025.

Precinct-Level Recounts
Recounts may be requested by precinct (in a town) or by ward (in a city). Petitions for this type of recount are available from local election offices and the Secretary of the Commonwealth’s office.
For a recount by precinct or ward, candidates must file recount petitions with local election officials no later 5 p.m., Thursday, September 3, 2026.
Local election officials must to complete the recount by 5 p.m., Friday, September 11, 2026.
District-Wide Recounts
District-wide recounts can be requested if it appears, based on unofficial results, that the difference between candidates is less than 0.5% of the total votes cast.
District-wide recount petitions must be obtained from the Secretary of the Commonwealth’s office.
The deadline to file district-wide recount petitions with local election officials in the district is 3 p.m., Thursday, September 3, 2026.
Local election officials will complete certification of these petitions by 12 p.m., Friday, September 4, 2026.
The campaign must then file the certified petitions with the Secretary of the Commonwealth’s Elections Division by 5 p.m., Friday, September 4, 2026.
Local election officials must complete the recount by 5 p.m., Friday, September 11, 2026.
