The American Heart Association / American Stroke Association supports and advocates for public policies that will help improve the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20 percent while reducing deaths by coronary heart disease and stroke by 20 percent by 2020. There are many pieces of legislation that we will be working on including but not limited to, in issues around Obesity Prevention: Support policy that eliminates waivers and substitutions for physical education; Ensure that Physical Education is delivered by a certified/license PE teacher; Ensure that Physical Education standards are implemented in schools; Require Physical Activity in addition to physical education is incorporated into the school day; Require elimination of industrially-produced Trans fat in restaurants; Require food procurement standards for all state agencies that are consistent with guidelines developed by the AHA or HHS; Provide calorie and sodium information on menus and menu boards at point of purchase; Promote built environments that integrate physical activity into daily life; Provide safe route to schools; Support the use of zoning policy to increase access to safe placed for recreation; Support the creation of complete streets. In issues around Acute Cardiovascular Care Require psychomotor skill based CPR training before graduation; Support the establishment of an AED Program in School; Develop a Coordinated Stroke System of Care to improve the treatment of the stroke patient; Support the implementation of a telemedicine program. In issues around Health Care Access, Cost and Quality Support policies that would require birthing facility to perform a pulse oximetry screening on every newborn prior to discharge; Support policies that would require coverage of all evidence based USPSTF A and B preventive services under MassHealth with no or minimal cost-sharing. In issues around Surveillance Establish a Statewide registry that compiles stroke incidence and care information and statistics that aligns with the stroke consensus metrics. In issues around Tobacco Control Support significant increase in tobacco excise tax on all tobacco products; Support tobacco control prevention and cessation funding. In issues around Funding for Heart Disease and Stroke Research and Prevention Secure dedicated state appropriations for heart disease and stroke priorities. And in issues around Health Equity Support public funding to address health disparities and improve health equity; Health Equity- Support and sustain an Office of Health Equity.
