Brook Farm:
Unearthing Hidden Histories

Brook Farm Archaeological Site

Few places in Boston contain such a diverse set of archaeological materials and research opportunities as the Brook Farm site in West Roxbury. Since the 1990’s 88,282 artifacts have been recovered including materials from the Massachusett Native people, colonial-era farmers, transcendental utopian society members, Civil War soldiers, orphans, poor people, and children with behavioral issues.

In 2019 the City of Boston Archaeology Program was awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Humanities Collections and Reference Resources (HCRR) grant to digitize these collections. The grant also included funding for an online exhibit.

The Commonwealth Museum was pleased to partner with the City of Boston Archaeology Program and the University of Massachusetts Boston Public History Program to host the exhibit. Special thanks to City Archaeologist Joseph Bagley, Dr. Jane Becker, Director of the Public History Track at the University of Massachusetts Boston, and Madison Vlass, a graduate student in the Public History program who created the exhibit.

The Brook Farm Archaeological Exhibit has been made possible in part by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities: Democracy demands wisdom.
