Creating a Legacy

Creating a Legacy
During the Civil War, Lewis Hayden advocated the recruitment of African-American soldiers. When finally approved by federal authorities, he played a prominent role in recruiting three black regiments from Massachusetts. The African Meeting House on Beacon Hill was a central place for organizing. Built by African-American workers in 1806, it is the oldest black church building in America. Today it is the home of the Museum of African American History.
