Slavery in Colonial Boston
Young girls from prominent families learned the art of needlepoint. This embroidered image by Hannah Otis depicts Boston Common around 1750. The large house is the mansion of Thomas Hancock, later inherited by his nephew John. The rider depicted in the foreground may have been the young John Hancock.
