Paul Revere
Patriot Artist, and Printer
Paul Revere's fame comes mainly from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's 1860 poem The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere. In life, Revere was at times a soldier, patriot, and entrepreneur, but perhaps the most tangible part of his legacy is his work as a gold, silver, and coppersmith.
Revere learned his craft from his father, and his graceful and artistic work with silver made his creations much in demand during his lifetime. By 1764, Revere had turned his talents to engraving in copper, and his work includes many examples of portraiture, cartoons, advertisements, and currency.
