This Land is My Land
King Phillip's War, 1676
This war takes its name from Phillip, a sachem and son of Massasoit, the Wampanoag leader who had originally welcomed the Pilgrims.
The war ignited in Plymouth Colony after the controversial execution of several Wampanoags accused of murder. The war's deeper cause, however, was the colonists' relentless apetite for Native land.
A series of violent incidents escalated into war when colonists unleashed their fury on native villages. Indian warriors joined the fighting on both sides. In the end, colonists had killed "King" Philip and sold hundreds of natives into slavery.
