Celebrating Roxbury: Today and in Historical Memory

photo of Roxbury wall muralRoxbury has an impressive historical legacy and vibrant tradition of community activism. Using original photographs by artist Anthony W. Lanier, a new lobby exhibit at the Commonwealth Museum celebrates this unique story. Historical institutions are featured including the Twelfth Baptist Church, where then-divinity student Martin Luther King Jr. preached and met his future wife Coretta Scott King.  Also included are photos of prominent visitors to Roxbury including Congressman John Lewis, an icon of the Civil Rights movement, and Pulitzer Prize winning playwright August Wilson, whose work explored the African-American experience. The exhibit also highlights present-day Roxbury from construction of the Islamic Center of New England, to the annual Berklee Beantown Jazz Festival.

In the upstairs lobby until April 1st.
