Chapter 25 and 26 of the Acts of 2009 have merged the Executive Office of Transportation and Public Works with the Massachusetts Highway Department, Massachusetts Aeronautics Commission, Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, Massachusetts Turnpike Authority, and the Registry of Motor Vehicles under the new name of Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT). There are four major areas of responsibility: Highway Division, Rail and Transit Division, Aeronautics Division, and the Registry of Motor Vehicles Division. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority retains a separate legal standing while its board is comprised of the same members that oversee MassDOT, the board is appointed by the Governor. The Regional Transportation Authorities are subject to MassDOT oversight.
