The Department of Revenue administers the state's tax system, collecting state taxes including income, sales and use, corporate, estate, and other taxes. It offers taxpayers assistance by toll free telephone or on a walk-in basis at its district offices statewide. The department offers taxpayers assistance, audits tax returns, and enforces state tax laws. It also has general supervisory responsibility over local taxes and related financial matters, provides auditing services and technical assistance to municipalities, and oversees distribution of direct local aid to cities and towns and regional school districts. On July 1, 1987, DOR became responsible for the administering the Massachusetts Child Support Enforcement Program.
