This office strives to protect the public from preventable harmful exposure to radiation from equipment in hospitals and doctors' offices as well as from nuclear power reactors. Under MGL Ch. 111:5B, all x-ray units must be inspected and registered with this office. It administers the requirements for registration and licensure of radiologic technologists, radiographers, and nuclear medicine therapists. In addition, this office regulates the use of lasers, microwaves, color TV receivers, video display terminals, and mammography facilities. Radiological surveys of homes, playgrounds, landfills, and other sites are conducted where radioactivity is suspected to contribute to increased incidence of illness. In addition, information about radon and testing is available from this office It is responsible for the implementation of a program to manage the disposal of low-level radioactive waste (for information on the Low-Level Radioactive Waste Management Board, see G35). The office also has a Nuclear Incident Advisory Team (NIAT) which can respond on a 24-hour basis to any radiation accident or incident within the Commonwealth.
