School Finance and District Support oversees and approves all grant and financially-based programs available from the department. Some include: Chapter 636, Desegregation funding, Magnet Schools, METCO programs, School Choice, which allows participating school systems to accept non-resident students; Charter Schools, which are public schools that operate independently of any school committee under a five-year charter granted by the Board of Education; Transportation Reimbursement; State Wards, who are homeless pupils or those in foster care and whose cost of education is reimbursed to the community have the child under its jurisdiction; and the Pothole Program, which is a one-time financial assistance for unforeseen circumstances from the department to local school districts.
