The former Bass River Savings Bank, a contributing structure in the Bass River Historic District, was purchased and donated to the Cultural Center of Cape Cod by a neighbor in 2000. The Cultural Center of Cape Cod is a nonprofit organization whose aim was to create a center for the arts for the mid-cape community.
After almost 17 years of vacancy, the Colonial Revival building was in need of significant repair. The Cultural Center of Cape Cod spent the next several years raising funds to rehabilitate the building. In 2006, the Center was allotted $400,000 in Community Preservation Act funds to complete its renovations.
The renovations included removing old bank teller stations and restoring the bank’s vault, which is now used as gallery space. The center celebrated its grand opening in February of 2007. Located on Old Main Street in South Yarmouth, local officials hope that the Cultural Center of Cape Cod will serve as a keystone in the revitalization of the village center.
