There are many facilities for swimming, camping, hiking, walking and bike riding at MassParks but they also offer fishing, canoeing, horseback riding, sailing, wind surfing, rock climbing, skiing, golfing, and other recreational activities. There are opportunities for picnics, outdoor performances, areas to rent for company or family gatherings, historic sites, skating rinks, playgrounds, athletic fields, interpretive programs and much more. Telephone reservations may be made at a state park or forest, up to 120 days in advance for a seven-night stay or more, or up to 2 days in advance for a shorter stay, by calling the individual site. Call the toll free number listed above for further details. Discount passes for seniors and the handicapped are available.

Boston Harbor Islands National Park comprises 17 of the 34 islands in the harbor. Some of the islands are privately owned, and some of the 17 islands are left in their natural state, with no public access allowed. The remaining islands are actively managed by the Department of Conservation and Recreation. A variety of recreational activities and historical sites are offered. The Department of Conservation and Recreation is one of twelve managing partners of the harbor islands park system. A variety of recreational activities and historical sites are offered.

Zoo New England, formerly the Commonwealth Zoological Corporation, was formed by Chapter 6, Acts of 1991 as a non-profit organization in but not subject to the Metropolitan District Commission. The corporation has as its responsibility the care, custody, and control of the metropolitan zoos: the Franklin Park Zoo in Boston and the Walter D. Stone Zoo in Stoneham.
