More commonly referred to as the Executive Office of Public Safety, the secretariat is responsible for the development and oversight of agencies, programs, and several boards, which fight crime and ensure the safety of all residents and visitors in the Commonwealth. The major departments are the: Architectural Access Board; Board of Building Regulation and Standards; Department of Criminal Justice Information Services; Department of Correction; Department of Fire Services; Department of Public Safety; Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency; Department of State Police; Massachusetts National Guard Office of the Chief Medical Examiner; Motor Vehicle Insurance Merit Rating Board; Massachusetts Parole Board; Sex Offender Registry Board; and the State 911 Department. In addition, it is administratively responsible for, the Highway Safety Division, Commonwealth Public Safety Broadband Office, Office of Grants and Research, and the State Police Crimes Laboratory/Forensic Services Group.

The Department of Public Safety supervises several divisions and boards responsible for law enforcement and the protection of lives and property within the state. Among the divisions and boards within the department are the Architectural Access Board, the Board of Building Regulations and Standards , Construction Supervisor Licenses, the Division of Inspection, overseeing Amusement Rides, Buildings, Boilers and Pressure Vessels, Elevators, Refrigeration and Air-conditioning, to name a few. Additionally, the Department oversees the State Athletic Commission. DPS has instituted a new protocol for the reporting of incidents that require the immediate attention of the DPS. If there is an Emergency involving a DPS regulated activity please contact the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency at 508-820-1444 to report DPS related incident. This number should be used for all DPS related events, including but not limited to the following: Incident involving: building collapse/failure; elevators/escalators; boiler or air tank failure/explosion; amusement or tramway incidents; horse carriage incidents; incidents involving hoisting and excavating equipment.
