More commonly referred to as the Executive Office of Public Safety, the secretariat is responsible for the development and oversight of agencies, programs, and several boards, which fight crime and ensure the safety of all residents and visitors in the Commonwealth. The major departments are: Department of Public Safety; Department of Criminal Justice Information Services; Department of Correction; Sex Offender Registry Board; Department of Fire Services; Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency; Department of State Police; Massachusetts National Guard; Architectural Access Board; Board of Building Regulation and Standards; Office of the Chief Medical Examiner; Merit Rating Board; Parole Board; and the State 911 Department. In addition, it is administratively responsible for, the Governor's Highway Safety Division, the Automobile Theft Strike Force, Governor's Alliance Against Drugs, and Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission. As of April 1, 2001 a Racial and Gender Profiling Hotline was established to provide citizens with a toll free number to report incidents in which a motorist feels they may have been stopped by police solely based on their race or gender. As of 2011 this line was disconnected.

The Department of Public Safety supervises several divisions and boards responsible for law enforcement and the protection of lives and property within the state. Among the divisions and boards within the department are the Architectural Access Board, the Board of Building Regulations and Standards , Construction Supervisor Licenses, the Division of Inspection, overseeing Amusement Rides, Buildings, Boilers and Pressure Vessels, Elevators, Refrigeration and Air-conditioning, to name a few. Additionally, the Department oversees the State Athletic Commission. DPS has instituted a new protocol for the reporting of incidents that require the immediate attention of the DPS. If there is an Emergency involving a DPS regulated activity please contact the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency at 508-820-1444 to report DPS related incident. This number should be used for all DPS related events, including but not limited to the following: Incident involving: building collapse/failure; elevators/escalators; boiler or air tank failure/explosion; amusement or tramway incidents; horse carriage incidents; incidents involving hoisting and excavating equipment.
