The Massachusetts Commission for the Blind provides the Commonwealth's share of the Supplemental
Security Income program payment, under the aid to the blind category, to more than
4,500 eligible blind recipients each year by offering financial and medical assistance. It
offers vocational rehabilitation, independent living social services, home care and
respite assistance, radio reading programs, resource information, community systems
advocacy, and residential and day services. The Commission provides after-school
recreation and socialization programs for blind children, aged 7 to 12, in four geographic
areas. The program provides emergency assistance to needy blind clients and burial
assistance for families. In its vocational rehabilitation program, the Commission, in
collaboration with the Massachusetts Jobs Council, identifies employment sectors with
growth opportunities, targets training programs consistent with those sectors, and
identifies employment opportunities for qualified blind applicants.
In addition, the Commission for the Blind operates an electronic bulletin board service.
This system provides thousands of job postings and downloadable files, hundreds of special
interest groups and Internet E-Mail addresses for home computer users who have modems
installed in their equipment. Bulletins are also provided to keep users informed on
subjects that might require their immediate attention.
