The state geologist provides state agencies and citizens with professional advice on matters relating to ground water, geology, soil and mineral resources. Its goals are: to promote basic geologic mapping; assist in collecting, compiling, analyzing, correlating and preserving data pertaining to the geological environment, and to disseminate this information to the public via maps, databases, reports and publications.

Statutorily known as the Office of Geographic Information, MassGIS is responsible for developing the Commonwealth’s map information; providing on-line services for making that information accessible; providing mapping and spatial analysis services to support operational and policy needs of the Commonwealth; fostering cooperative development of map information among local, state, regional and federal government agencies, academic institutions and the private sector in order to improve the quality, access, cost-effectiveness and utility of geographical information as a strategic resource for the state; establishing new or promoting existing mapping standards; and providing technical assistance to political subdivisions of the Commonwealth in developing and accessing spatial data and related technologies; and setting standards for developing spatial data.
