This commission regulates all horse and harness racing in the state including the regulation of calculation on odds for payment of winnings. It licenses the track, the trainers, the horses, the jockeys, and any simulcast and inter-track wagering. The Commission regulates two thoroughbred tracks, Suffolk Downs and Great Barrington Racecourse and a harness track at Plainridge Racecourse in Plainville; and one racing fair located in Northampton. In 1997, racing returned to Berkshire County with a commercial license granted for thoroughbred racing in Great Barrington.
