Individual Lifetime Achievement

For more than 20 years Gretchen Schuler has been a dedicated historic preservation advocate, consultant, educator, volunteer, and planner. She worked as the preservation planner for the city of Newton for almost 10 years and now works as a private preservation consultant. In this role she prepares preservation plans, conducts surveys of historic properties, and writes and edits National Register nominations, among many other activities. At Preservation Massachusetts, Inc., Gretchen has served on the Board of Advisors and Board of Directors and currently serves on the Regional Advisory Council. Her many accomplishments include helping dozens of communities document historic landscapes through her work with the Department of Conservation and Recreation’s Heritage Landscape Inventory Program and she co-authored a book entitled Reading the Land: Massachusetts Heritage Landscapes. She is an active volunteer in the town of Wayland, where she serves on many committees and advisory boards, including the Planning Board, the Wayland Historical Commission, the Wayland Community Preservation Committee, and the Wayland Historic District Commission, which she currently chairs. Ms. Schuler is also a dedicated educator. She has served as an adjunct professor at Boston University helping to train a new generation of historic preservationist professionals and provides training to local historical commissions through Preservation Massachusetts, Inc. Ms. Schuler is a graduate of Simmons College and holds a Master’s Degree in Historic Preservation from Boston University. Her work and expertise have had a positive impact on a large number of individuals and organizations within the preservation community and beyond. There are very few cities and towns in Massachusetts that have not benefited from Gretchen Schuler’s tireless efforts, positive outlook, breadth of knowledge, and willingness to give.
